Sara Garden Armstrong’s installations represent a site specific approach to her continuing exploration of organic movement and transformation. They expand her research focused process to finding abstract interpretations of scientific phenomena and use the results to animate space in a dynamic new way.
Her latest installation, Breath and Shadow, combines and juxtaposes artwork from different periods of Armstrong’s career. The traveling exhibition layers shadow, light, sound, line and form to create a unique multimedia installation in each venue, so that each unique installation comprises a response to the individual space.
Similarly each atrium commission is unique - the result of Armstrong’s evaluation of the clients’ individual needs, their site and the surrounding spaces. As she develops her ideas, research and exploration of materials, she builds a scale model that accurately depicts her visualization of the concepts.
Armstrong’s artistic investigations have taken her in myriad directions and into work of many genres and scales, from ten foot drawings to small art books. See Archive. All of these use a range of visual tools including movement, light and sound to explore organic change. Having enjoyed teaching in diverse situations through the years, Armstrong is available as a visiting artist.
